Journalists are well aware that people with disabilities aren’t helpless, that not every gay man has a wardrobe full of pink shirts, and that not every young person is addicted to their iPhone. Even so, sometimes what they write suggests the contrary, unconsciously and unintentionally.


We need to promote representation that is free of the clichés. Aside from today’s journalists, future journalists also need to understand this clearly. We challenge them to make sincere and nuanced reports on difficult themes.

Yves Desmet plays the devil’s advocate. Instructors at various colleges and universities show the clip to their journalism students in the first week of the new academic year. This opens up the discussion and also calls for participants in the competition.
